Autism Assessments

Cognitive Assessments

An autism assessment is a process designed to explore the individual's individual strengths as well as support needs and assist in providing recommendations on the future.

What the process looks like:

  • Developmental history and current concerns are discussed with parent (usually over the phone)
  • Clinic observation including Autism related question with the child.
  • ADI-R (with parent)
  • Individualised suite of screeners which may include:
  • ABAS, GARS, Autism checklist for girls
  • Report
  • Feedback session

  • The tools chosen are tailored to the individual. For the majority of assessments we chose the MIDGAS-2, a neuro- affirming person centered tool that values more natural communication styles.
  • While the ADOS-2 continues to be a widely used clinical tool, Sprout Psychology Centre vales tools that affirm identity not just diagnose. The MIGDAS-2 provides an inclusive and validating picture especially for women, girls and individuals who mask. This approach helps individuals better understand themselves and not feel 'labelled'.

Educational Assessments

An Educational Assessment aims to ascertain if an individual is meeting their learning potential. This assessments combines the results of the cognitive assessment and academic achievement to assist in educational planning.

Educational assessments are recommended when the following issues are present or suspected:

  • Evidence of poor academic performance
  • Behavioural difficulties e.g restlessness, aggression, poor listening, poor attention or concentration
  • Specific Learning Disorders in Reading (Dyslexia), Mathematics (Dyscalculia) or Written Expression (Dysgraphia)
  • Discrepancy between intellectual ability and performance

Assessment tools used:

  • Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC). Ages 6 years to 16 years
  • Stanford Binet Intelligence Scales, Ages 2 years to 85+ years
  • Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT). Ages 4 years to 50 years 11 months
  • Adaptive Behaviour Assessment System (ABAS) Ages birth to 89 years

Behaviour and Attention Assessments

What the process looks like:

  • Developmental history and current concerns are discussed with parent (usually over the phone)
  • WISC-V- this can help with cognitive strengths and weaknesses and identify typical profiles of ADHD
  • Individualised suite of screeners which may include:
  • CBCL, Conners CBRS, CEFI, ADHD for children screener, SDQ, Vanderbilt, ABAS-3, Young DIVA
  • Play based observation

  • Our approach to assessment of behaviour and attention goes beyond that of ticking a box on a questionnaire. We highly value the tool of observation in multiple environments.
